An
educational documentary addresses the meaning of "Universal
Design" in single family home construction.
The
origin of this documentary stems from an Interior Design class
project assignment required in the Seattle Pacific University
course, Universal Design in Housing. The students in
the class of 2005, were involved in the redesign of an existing
floor plan previously built by a local builder. They worked
directly with the builder and architect ascertaining a variety
of site criteria as well as structural considerations. The
primary goal was to redesign the spaces in the home using universal
design principles in addition to other specific design goals.
The students presented the proposed plan to the builder for
potential construction. The builder approved the plan and went
on to construct the new two-story, 2,500 sq.ft. 4 bedroom,
2 1/2 bath home.
You
will view the highlights of this real-life dynamic process
including the groundbreaking ceremony. A brief overview of
the trend to move toward UD in the greater Seattle area is
also included.
